Sue Ellen Sanders, 80, of Castalia, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, April 12, 2026, at her home.

She was born September 29, 1945, in Sandusky, the daughter of William Rector and Alice Jean (Cooper) Stout. Sue was a graduate of Huron High School. She had worked at the Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, as a catering waitress for many years before retiring.

Sue will be remembered by the family as the "Aunt" everyone loved, as she was quite involved over the years, planning and hosting family activities and outings for relatives at her home. As the years went by and her siblings passed away, she eventually became the "Matriarch" of the family. She loved spending time working in her gardens around her home and reading. But she especially loved spending time with the family and the grandchildren, and had quite an active life as a lover of the outdoors and nature. Sue could be found outback at her old home in Castalia, where she had a fish pond or in the backyard of her place in Bay View, feeding the birds, the wild turkeys, the deer and the local groundhog when they came around.

Sue is survived by her daughter, Dawn (Jeff) Schmid of Bay View; her son, Scott Sanders of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Tyler and Hannah Schmid and Nate Sanders; and lots of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years, Erskin "Wayne" Sanders (2016); a brother, Bill Stout; and five sisters, Peggy Yost, Nancy Faulhaber, Judy Haas, Penny Stein and Barbie Wiley.

It was Sue's wish to be cremated. A "Celebration of Sue's Life" will be at a later date by the family.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Stein Hospice Service, Inc., 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.
