Tom Stahl Obituary

Tom W.(Thomas) Stahl

May 7, 1937 - Oct 28, 2024

Vermilion

Tom W. (Thomas) Stahl, 87, of Vermilion, died peacefully Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, at his treasured home in Vermilion Lagoons.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Faye Lucille (nee Stallman) Stahl of Vermilion; daughters, Cynthia "Cindy" (Todd) Yuhas of Port Orange, Florida, and Susan "Sue" (Gene) Lazuta of Medina; sisters, Janet Stahl of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, and Carol (Skip) Mosmiller of Severna, Maryland.

Born May 7, 1937, in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, to George and Ruth (nee Hawk) Stahl, Tom graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1959 and married his fellow pharmacy student, Faye Stallman, whom he first met in lab class because the alphabetical seating had placed them side by side. He began his life-long pharmacy career at Marshall Drug Store, which later became the Cunningham Drug Company. As a District Manager, he made many friends and gained the experience necessary to successfully own and operate his own Medicine Shoppe store, later the Stadium Pharmacy, in Sandusky, also becoming the co-owner of The Medicine Shoppe, later the Vintage Pharmacy, in Vermilion with his good friend Carl Lapp (Carol). At his retirement, Tom and Faye's good friends, Kim and Jim Ickes assumed ownership of both pharmacies.

Tom enthusiastically embraced every opportunity to experience new things, traveling throughout his life, especially after he and Faye retired. They visited all 50 states, and a number of international locations. A talented sailor who could be seen windsurfing on the lake every month of the year, he represented the Vermilion Boat Club and won, with his daughters Cindy and Sue, the title of Interlake National Champion in 1975. A fiercely competitive man, he was a committed bridge player who achieved the rank of Life Master, making life-long friends of his treasured playing partners. A lover of the arts, he was a discerning audiophile who had a passion for jazz and classical music, and who attended and supported Cleveland Orchestra for many years. As devoted birdwatchers, he and Faye frequently participated in organized bird watching excursions, while never missing the opportunity to pull over on the road when presented with the chance to add another bird to their impressive Life List of species observed.

Tom Stahl was an active member of Birmingham Methodist Church, American Pharmacist's Association, Ohio Pharmacist's Association, American Contract Bridge League, and Black Swamp Bird Observatory.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at Birmingham Methodist Church, 15018 South St., Wakeman. Inurnment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made in his name to Birmingham Methodist Church or Black Swamp Bird Observatory, 13551 W. State Route 2, Oak Harbor, Ohio, 43449, or at www.bsbo.org.
