Verenna Carman Obituary

Verenna Kizziah (Henderson) Carman

Sep 1, 1931 - Nov 27, 2023

Sandusky

Verenna Kizziah (Henderson) Carman, 92, of Sandusky, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at Providence Care Center.

She was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Lima, to Clarence Bentley Henderson and Anna Niles (Sullivan) Henderson.

Verenna was the fourth of five children. She was a graduate of Lima Senior and attended college with her older sister, Mable, at Bluffton. At an early age, Verenna studied piano and organ. Verenna and her sister, Maggie, traveled across town just for her to take lessons. She combined her love of children and music and used her gifts of playing and transposition for "the upbuilding of the kingdom" at Fourth Street Baptist Church in Lima and as church organist for Second Baptist Church in Sandusky for 60 years until her death. Verenna's love of music impacted many youth over the years who've since become ministers of music or directors, including her own daughter, Heather.

Verenna met Clarence through a blind date arranged by Clarence's sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Calvin Singleton Sr. Unbeknownst to many, Calvin Singleton Sr. resided with Verenna and the Henderson family when he was just a young boy. So Cal Sr. knew Verenna long before either of them met or married their spouses. In 1962, Verenna and Clarence were married and shared one son (stillborn) and three daughters as a result of their 53 year union, Daniana Rei, who preceded them both in death, Kisha Faith, and Heather Love.

Verenna worked at St. Rita's Hospital and for a lawyer while in Lima. Then once Heather turned five, she worked at Sears in the cash office for 30 years before she retired in 2006. Verenna was an active member of Order of the Eastern Stars, Fourth Street Baptist Church, and church organist at Second Baptist Church for 60 years. Verenna also was a longtime member and often times board member of

Sandusky Choral Society. Prior to and after her retirement from Sears, Verenna traveled the world with Clarence, the girls, and her grandbabies.

Verenna leaves behind to cherish her kind, generous, loving spirit, and wonderful memories her beloved and devoted daughters, Kisha Faith Browning (Lloyd) of Columbus, Indiana, and Heather Love Carman-Stanley (Jack) of Sandusky; grandchildren, Zora Legaci Carman and Zane Clarence Carman of Sandusky; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Although she was very sickly as child, she was preceded in death by her loving parents, Clarence and Anna Henderson; and siblings, James (Ilo) Henderson, Joseph (Delores and Carole) Henderson, Mable (Sylvester) Woodard, and Magnolia (Clifford) Housley.

Verenna's homegoing service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at Second Baptist Church, 315 Decatur St., Sandusky. Eastern Star services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Verenna's name may be made to Sandusky Choral Society.

My heartfelt condolences to the daughters of Verenna. I wish we had been a little closer and I wish I had known of your mom´s passing. I wouldn´t have missed attending. Sister Carman was a sincere sister in `the Order´ and always giving love. She was a real STAR, no doubt a gem. She will continue to live in my life as she rests in loving arms.

She will be missed. A smile for everyone when she ran into you at the store, post office, or church. Kisha & Heather I have walked in your shoes but absolutely no one knows how you feel. Me either, praying for you and yours.

Dear Kisha and Heather. I'm so very sorry hear about your mom's passing. It was people like your mom, along with the Bennetts, the Orrs, the Clemens---among others---who were such an important part of my youth. They had high standards, expected much of us and were gracious with their wisdom and time.

I remember a funny story about your mom (as told me by my mom). Mrs Carman was driving home one night--it was bitter cold--and she apparently went through a red right. The policeman stopped her and asked, "Didn't you see that red light?" And your mom replied, "Not tonight!"

My sincerest condolences.
