Virginia Mamere Obituary

Virginia Mamere

Apr 22, 1953 - Jan 16, 2026

Huron

Virginia "Ginny" Mamere, 72, of Huron, passed away peacefully Friday, January 16, 2026, surrounded by her husband and family at Cleveland Clinic, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born April 22, 1953, in Lorain, to Howard and Virginia Sloan. Ginny graduated from Lorain High School in 1971.

Ginny was a registered nurse, graduating from Ohio University in 1978. She retired in 2015 after a devoted 37-year nursing career. She was a longtime member of the Firelands Chorale and St. Peter's Choir. A lifelong lover of music, she resumed playing the violin in the early 2000s after a 30-year hiatus and was recently inspired to learn the harp as well. She played fiddle for The Moorhens, a Celtic band, and greatly enjoyed performing.

Ginny also loved gardening and was a member of The Garden Club, later becoming a Master Gardener. She was actively involved with The Prayer Path, Magnificat, and other women's groups at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Community-minded, she served as a Big Brothers/Big Sisters sponsor and coordinated the after-school program in Berlin Heights.

She is survived by her husband, Russell Mamere; her daughter, L. Jasmin (Whalen) Vu of Tauranga, New Zealand; and her son, Matthew Whalen of Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by three stepsons, Scott Mamere of Columbus, Jeff Mamere of Texas, and Brian Mamere of Huron. Additional survivors include her sisters, Claudia Losey of Pickerington and Kelly Richter of Canton, Michigan, and her brother, Christopher Sloan of Lorain. Ginny was blessed with 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Virginia Sloan, and her sister, Hilarie Peck.

A Celebration of Life will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Huron.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Sandusky Chapter.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, Huron.
