Minister Walter Thompson Sr., 74, of Sandusky, departed this life Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky.

He was born July 25, 1948, in Veto, Alabama, and lived most of his life in Sandusky and Lorain. He worked various jobs and positions and retired as a security guard.

Min. Thompson served as a deacon under the late Pastor Eddy Henry of New Jerusalem Baptist Church, Sandusky. In 1999, he joined The Thomas Temple Church of God in Christ under the late Bishop Frank Richard. After the passing of Bishop Richard in 2003, Min. Thompson remained a faithful member of the church under the leadership of Pastor Susan Coleman. Under Pastor Coleman's tutelage, he was ordained as a minister Oct. 12, 2006. His dedication and faithfulness elevated him to Assistant Pastor of the Sandusky church. He had a solid work ethic and had various positions within the church. He became Superintendent of the Sunday School Department and Chairman of the Men's Department. Min. Thompson worked weekends at the church store in Toledo as the grill master and was called "Holyfield on the grill." He also cooked and served at the Sandusky church. He was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Min. Thompson was known for his singing and was a former member of the Charlton Singers. He was also an original member of the Black ACs (Black Athletic Club). He enjoyed singing, cooking, baking, and football.

Min. Thompson leaves to cherish his memory two brothers, Kevin (Stacey) Thompson and Rufus Thompson; sister, Kathy Portis; goddaughter, Marla King; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Walter Earl Thompson Jr.; and parents, Jack Henry and Rossie Thompson.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, until the time of his service at 12 p.m. at Faith Ministries, 1306 Euclid Ave., Lorain. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 1814 Milan Road, Sandusky.
