Bertha Jewel (Hayes) Hicks, 88, of Collins, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born Dec. 11, 1935, in Charley, Kentucky, to Willie and Erma (Hinckle) Hayes.
Bertha enjoyed working on puzzles, canning and cooking for her family and friends, making quilts for her grandchildren, and canning and spending time with her family. She was employed at Vandresser for many years. Bertha was a member of Trinity Temple Milan. She was most known for her love of life.
Bertha is survived by her daughter, Barbara McGukins, Kathleen (Joseph) Cash; son, James (Natalie) Hicks; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ervin "Luke" Hicks; sisters, Opal Pearl Lyons, Mary Francis Hayes, Stella Mae Hayes, and Dora Elizabeth Moore; and brothers, Elijah Lee Hayes, Charlie Allen Hayes, and Relly B. Hayes.
Visitation for friends will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at Toft Funeral Home, Hinman Chapel, 38 South Street, Berlin Heights. Bertha's funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
