Bertina Catherine "Bertha" (Marketti) Buathier, 94, of Sandusky, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly early Monday morning, Aug. 15, 2022, at MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland.

Bertha was born Feb. 2, 1928, in Sandusky, the daughter of Frank and Rose Marie (Magi) Marketti. She was a 1949 graduate of Sandusky High School. Bertha worked as a waitress at Italian Gardens and Roman Villa for nearly 30 years and later went on to work in the Sandusky High School cafeteria for over 10 years before retiring. She also sold Avon products for over 30 years.

She loved spending time with her family and the grandkids, but her family will remember her mostly for how she was very personable, loved being around other people, and being a true social butterfly. Bertha was always moving. She was either taking aerobic or tai chi classes, yoga, taking long walks in the local area, or going on bike rides. She had a love for traveling and dancing, especially polka or any other style of dance.

She was a life-long member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Y.M.C.A., TOPS (for 25 years), Italian-American Beneficial Club Ladies Auxiliary, and "Birthday Club" with her girlfriends for many years.

Bertha is survived by her son, David (Gloria) Buathier of Sandusky; two daughters, Debbie (Rick) Marino of Cuyahoga Falls and Denise (Deno) Toccaceli of Sandusky; stepdaughter, Martha Zimmerman of Columbus; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Jennifer; six stepgrandchildren, Kandice, Dustin, Lori, Angela, Bret, and Bart; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; soulmate and pup, Miley; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 63 years, Luis E. "Ernie" Buathier, who died June 13, 2012; beloved grandson, Matthew P. Gillingham (2018); great-granddaughter, Harper; sister, Donna Millis; and brother, Eugene "Geno" Marketti.

It was her wish to be cremated. The family will receive friends 8:30-9:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, at David F. Koch Funeral and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Fr. Jacob George will officiate. Burial will be later at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Sandusky.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio, 44870, and because she loved dogs, to Humane Society of Erie County, 1911 Superior Street, Sandusky, Ohio, 44870, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105-9959.
