Sandusky

Edward M. Gembka Jr., 84, residing in Sandusky, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 31, 2024, at Admirals Point Nursing Home in the care of Stein Hospice after a lengthy illness.

Edward was born Aug. 8, 1939, in Elyria, to Edward and Donnely (Koker) Gembka Sr.

Edward graduated from Elyria High School in 1957. He moved and lived in Santa Monica, California, for two years. He was a veteran of U.S. Army who proudly served his country in Manheim, Germany, from 1963-1966. He was employed as an Insurance Salesman at Allstate, Nationwide, and Prudential Insurance Companies. He then moved into financial planning and real estate sales. Edward was a founding President of Sandusky Optimist Club and former Lt. Governor of Ohio Optimist. He was a member of Men's Garden Club in Sandusky and Zion Lutheran Church in Sandusky. He enjoyed landscaping his backyard and loved watching wildlife. Edward was hospitable to all friends, family, and neighbors. He never knew a stranger.

Edward is survived by his wife, Sylvia (Howard) Gembka, whom he married March 4, 1967; children, Julie Nardi of Cincinnati, Edward (Sandy) Gembka of Chesterland, Ohio, and Cynthia Jansen of Mason; brothers, Peter David (Virginia) Gembka of Elyria and John T. Gembka of Vermilion; grandchildren, Michael (Kelli) Bond, Richard Nardi, Daniel Nardi, Sydney Gembka, Jonathan Gembka, and Tucker Jansen; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carol Ann Gembka; and many friends.

Visitation for friends will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 Perkins Avenue, Sandusky, and 10 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2024, until the time of Edward's funeral at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Sandusky, with the Rev. Philip Gardner and the Rev. Allan Timple presiding. Burial will follow at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.

I am so sad to hear this news. Ed was like a father to me when we were neighbors. The hundreds of times we talked while enjoying a Diet Coke in the back yard are some of my fondest memories. He had a huge impact on my life, as did their whole family.
