Elaine Janice Waterfield, a beacon of kindness and generosity, passed away peacefully Friday, December 19, 2025, at Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky, surrounded by her children. She was 87.
Born January 12, 1938, in
Bristol, Connecticut, Elaine spent her early childhood in Terryville before moving to Sandusky during elementary school. She graduated from Sandusky High School in 1956 and later earned a bachelor of science in nursing from The Ohio State University.
After graduating from Ohio State, Elaine embarked on a fulfilling career as a registered nurse, a calling perfectly suited to her compassion, generosity, patience, and desire to help others. Her nursing career included service as a public health nurse and as a nurse at Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus, OH. Her commitment to educating the next generation of nurses led her to teach Nursing at Mount Carmel Hospital and Riverside School of Nursing, where she inspired countless students with her wisdom and compassion. After their children were born, Elaine devoted her love, time, care, and wisdom to raising them with her husband, Charles Waterfield, finding her greatest joy in her family. Her children and grandchildren were the love of her life.
In addition to family, Elaine was a dedicated community member, volunteering her time and talents for decades. Her altruistic spirit shone brightly through her work for Friends of Old Woman Creek, Perkins Alumni and Friends, Toastmasters, and many other groups throughout the years. She was passionate about teaching and mentoring youth, leading a local 4-H Club and serving as a Cub Scout den leader. Elaine was also one of the driving forces behind the creation of Bay Area Soccer League, including coaching her son's soccer team to a league championship.
Elaine's commitment to education extended to her decades-long involvement with Perkins Schools, where she was elected and re-elected to the Board of Education, serving with integrity and a desire to make Perkins Schools better for students, teachers, staff, alumni, and the entire community. She also served as a board member for Firelands Regional Medical Center, lending her thoughtful perspective and steady presence. Elaine's selfless nature and her dedication to causes she cared about left an indelible mark on her community.
Elaine is survived by her children, Amy (Jeff Pecchio) Waterfield of Brooklyn, New York, and Steve (Jaime) Waterfield of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and by her beloved grandchildren, Margot Pecchio, Davis Waterfield, and Austin Waterfield. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Jane (Terry) Flannigan of Kelowna, British Columbia; sister-in-law, Mary Waterfield of Columbus; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend and will be deeply missed. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her every day.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Mick" Waterfield; brothers, James Poole and Vincent Poole; and parents, Augustus and Bessie (Miskis) Poole.
Selfless and humble, Elaine accomplished so much with her optimism, patience, encouragement, belief, and intelligence. She was also remarkably creative and artistic, with a love for drawing and painting. Elaine had a beautiful singing voice that brought warmth and joy to her family and friends. Her life was a beautiful canvas filled with love, kindness, generosity, service, and a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. Elaine had the remarkable ability to uplift those around her, leaving a legacy of warmth and caring that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Elaine loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. The legacy of her wonderful life lives on through her children, grandchildren, and the countless lives she touched - a testament to a life well-lived and a heart that never stopped giving.
A celebration of Elaine's life will be at a later date.
In keeping with her generous spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others, the family kindly requests that, instead of flowers, memorial donations be made to Perkins Alumni and Friends Association or Friends of Old Woman Creek. Elaine believed in making a lasting difference, and she would have cherished the thought that, in her memory, someone's day was made a little brighter or a burden a little lighter. To truly honor her memory, all are encouraged to brighten someone's day, lend a helping hand, or perform an act of kindness-just as Elaine did every day.
