James R. Hiendlmayr, 75, a beloved husband, passed away early Monday morning, Oct. 31, 2022, at his home surrounded by family.
James was born Jan. 2, 1947, in Westlake, to the late Francis and Mary (Snyder) Hiendlmayr Sr.
James graduated from Cleveland State University and received his MBA from Baldwin Wallace College. After working 20 years at Ohio Caterpillar, Jim along with his wife, Gloria, established a renewable energy company in Erie County. They were married 25 years.
Jim was enthusiastic about racing and boating, and an avid member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association since 1975. Mostly, he enjoyed being creative, designing and implementing innovation projects in Renewable Energy. James spent 10 years as a Board Member of Green Energy Ohio and worked on Governor Taft's Biofuels and Renewable Energy Taskforce. James was a member of Society of Energy Engineers for over 30 years. In 1984, James along with a partner designed and built the first Landfill Gas to Energy Systems in the U.S located in Burlington, Vermont. After building projects across the U.S., in 2007, James established Renewable Energy Services of Ohio, transforming landfill gas methane into electricity in Erie County Ohio. RESO supplies renewable electricity to the cities of Milan, Oberlin, and Painesville. In 2007, James received Ohio Environmental Council Innovator Award and was recognized by Association of Energy Engineers for Innovation in Renewable Energy in 2009 for the Erie County Landfill.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria (Ordway) Hiendlmayr, whom he married Oct. 21, 1997; stepdaughters, Mary (John) Gaydos of Sandusky, Laura (William) LaGodney of Port Clinton, Erin Karbler of Columbus, and Carla Chuck Chubbuck) Serra of Chagrin Falls; grandchildren, Jordan (Tyler) Rohrer of Columbus, Emma Partin of Westerville, Jacob Gaydos of Sandusky, and Douglas Nickle of Columbus; brother, Francis Alan Hiendlmayr Jr. of Ocala, Florida; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a son, Robert Hiendlmayr; stepson, Robert McKay; and brother, Paul Hiendlmayr.
A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022, at Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Deacon Carolyn Steinfeldt will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting family with arrangements.
