John Lyren Obituary

John D. Lyren

Sep 22, 1945 - Jan 23, 2026

Sandusky

John D. Lyren, 80, of Sandusky, passed away Friday, January 23, 2026, at Stein Hospice Care Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born September 22, 1945, in Wadsworth, to Eugene and Florence (Scott) Lyren. John graduated from Wadsworth High School in 1964 and Bowling Green State University in 1969, and dedicated 30 years of his life to serving as an elementary school teacher with Sandusky City Schools, where he touched the lives of many students. He was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Huron and volunteered for many years at Christ's Community Meal in Huron.

John was a kind, gentle man with a quiet, generous spirit who found joy in simple pleasures. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, spending time outdoors, gardening, and caring for backyard birds and wildlife. In his younger years, he also loved hunting and fishing. Above all else, John cherished time spent with his family and friends, whom he loved dearly.

He had a deep, abiding faith in God. He was a good and faithful servant of the Lord and shared his simple but powerful message with everyone he met: "Let go and let God."

John is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Marie (Razel) Lyren, whom he married December 28, 1974; his sons, Michael (Emily) Lyren and Joseph Lyren; his daughter, Mary (Todd) Hausman; and his grandchildren, Kayla, Krista, Alexis, Dylan, Chase, Ethan, Madeleine, Evelyn, Paisley, and Aveda. He is also survived by his brothers, William (Elaine) Lyren and Robert (Pam) Lyren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, many special friends, and his beloved fur babies, Chanel and Teddy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, E.J. and Florence (Scott) Lyren.

At John's request, cremation has taken place. Friends may call Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church, 930 Main St., Huron, Ohio, beginning at 10 a.m., with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m.

Those wishing to honor John's memory may make a contribution to The Salvation Army, a cause he supported for many years. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling arrangements.

Uncle Johnny was the absolute best! My brothers, sister and I have nothing but loving and funny memories of Uncle Johnny and always - ALWAYS - were so happy when he came to see us. The love and kindness he shared with us will forever bring a smile to our faces and a warm place in our heart. It was such a bonus to have Uncle Johnny and Aunt Jean Marie together for even more laughs and love! Uncle Johnny - you made a difference in our lives and for that, we are eternally grateful. Your love and humor expanded to so, so many. We will all miss always.

John, you were always a loving and supportive friend from the first day I met you seventy years ago. A fine man in every way. I will cherish those memories.
