Mary Geoghan Obituary

Mary Frances Lewis Geoghan

Dec 3, 1927 - Aug 11, 2022

Norwalk

With heavy hearts, the Geoghan family announces the passing of their beloved mother, Mary Frances Lewis Geoghan, on Thursday, August 11, 2022.

Mary was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Albany, New York. She grew up in Rocky River, Ohio, and graduated from St. Augustine Academy High School and Flora Stone Mather of Western Reserve University with a B.S. in Nutrition. While at WRU, Mary was a member of Phi Omicron and Lux Honorary Societies and Phi Kappa Zeta, where she remained active until her death. In addition, Mary was President of Student Government and the recipient of 1949 Plain Dealer Award for writing in the field of Home Economics.

Mary married Dr. Joseph Edward Geoghan on July 5, 1950. They spent two years at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before moving to Norwalk in 1952 where Mary treasured her days as wife and mother and Joe practiced dentistry at Geoghan, Sommers and Loch. After raising her family, Mary co-founded Project Leadership in 1988 and The Volunteer Center in Huron County in 1989. She received Norwalk Distinguished Citizen in 1988, Ohio Volunteer Award as Outstanding Volunteer in 1989, and Leadership Award from Project Leadership in 1999. Mary served as a member of Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Salvation Army Advisory Board, and delivered Meals-on-Wheels for several years.

After 57 years in Norwalk, Joe and Mary left their many friends and moved to Colorado to be closer to their children. They celebrated 61 years of marriage July 5, 2011, before Joe passed Nov. 10, 2011.

Mary is survived by five children, Terri Jump (John), Randy Geoghan (Loretta), Maureen Geoghan (Jim Ball), Julie Byrd (Jeff), and Tina Geoghan (Randy Halfpop); four grandchildren, Heath Huggins (Laura), Leigha Elliott (Kevin), and Cai and Bailey Geoghan; and three great-grandchildren, Heath "Gavin" Huggins II, and Breck and Remington Elliott.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Geoghan (2011); son, Garth Geoghan (2015); mother, Pauline (Dinkel) Lewis (1966); and father, Howard Lewis (1980).

Mary will be mostly remembered for her big heart. She was born to care for others and throughout her life constantly sought out others that were in the need of love and support.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army of Norwalk.

Per their request, Mary and Joe will be laid to rest together at St. Paul's Cemetery, Norwalk, where they spent so many happy years!
