Nelda Madama-Shelly Obituary

Nelda J. Madama-Shelly

Jun 24, 1931 - Mar 8, 2026

Sandusky

Nelda Madama-Shelly, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished nurse, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family Sunday, March 8, 2026, at age 94.

Nelda was born June 24, 1931, to Charles and Marie (Knight) Wallace in the hills of West Virginia. She was raised in very humble circumstances, growing up with a strong work ethic, deep faith and appreciation for family, music, and learning. Nelda was married at 19 to Vincent C. Madama, who at that time had two years left to complete his degree in Education at The Ohio State University. They shared 54 years together. In that time, they raised their four children, sharing the challenges of ever-changing family life until Vince's passing. Nelda was the pillar of strength and encouragement for her family, providing support and guidance through life's challenges.

From childhood, she was a talented musician who played both violin and piano well. A lifelong lover of music, she also found delight in reading, playing games, and sharing laughter and love with her family. Nelda's home was often filled with music and joy, creating cherished memories.

Nelda set aside her high school dream of becoming a nurse to devote herself fully to raising her children. When her youngest began school, she took the opportunity that she had postponed. At the age of forty, she enrolled in the local school district's Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program. She excelled, was elected class president and graduated with perfect grades.

Nelda began her career at what was then Good Samaritan Hospital (now FRMC), primarily working on the Psychiatric unit. Over the next forty years, she touched countless lives with her skill, compassion and dedication. Nelda transitioned to part-time work in her later years and continued working until fully retiring at age eighty. This is a testament to her enduring commitment to caring for others.

After her husband's passing in 2004, Nelda spent thirteen fulfilling years living independently, savoring time with family and embarking on travels in the U.S. and Europe. Later in life, she was introduced to a fellow violin player and music lover, the Reverend Edgar Shelly. The two shared a deep connection through their mutual appreciation for classical music, live performances and travel. They were wed October 14, 2017, at Saint John's Church, where the Reverend Shelly had served for thirty-two years. Following the wedding, they spent their remaining years together in companionship… sharing daily life and enjoying music, live performances, and trips to Amish country.

Nelda is survived by her children, Vince (Sheila) Madama, Susan Richardson, and Greg (Sandy) Madama; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren who will remember her wisdom and spirit and carry forward her love.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vince; sister, Lois Ingle; and son, Brad.

Nelda will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered.

The family wishes to thank the many thoughtful, devoted Nurses and staff at Parkvue Community's Follet Court. Nelda was provided care with compassion and tenderness during her time of need.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, with the Rev. David Brown presiding. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.

Yesterday

Aunt Nelda was always a favorite and while I didn't see her too often while I was growing up, we became closer later in life. I would call to check in on her from time to time and when my sons Nick and Ryan were little, Aunt Nelda would host us after a long day at Cedar Point. The following morning, we would take her out to breakfast. You will be missed. Jeff Madama
