Raymond Leroy Wammes, 95, formally of Sandusky, residing in Fremont, passed away early Sunday morning, November 2, 2025, at Edgewood Manor after a brief illness.
Raymond was born December 3, 1929, in Rice Township, Fremont, to the late Clarence and Hazel (Biehler) Wammes Sr.
He graduated from Fremont Ross High School in 1947 and completed college courses at Bowling Green State University. Afterward, he worked for the former Carbon Works in Fremont until entering military service in 1951 with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He served at the U.S. Naval Base in Tacoma, Washington, and aboard the USS Pictor AF-54 in the Pacific area until his honorable discharge in 1955; He also served in the Army National Guard. Raymond was employed by Spector Freight System and later at Wagner Quarries, where he retired as a purchasing agent in 1991 after 15 years of service.
Raymond was a member of VFW Post 2529 and Senior Citizens Golf League. He enjoyed golfing, flying planes, traveling, watching Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians, going out to eat, and spending time with his family and friends.
Raymond is survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Genevieve "Jenny" M. (Nause) Wammes, in 2017; sister, Anna R. Nye; and brothers, Joseph, Cyril, Harold, Charles, and Clarence Wammes Jr.
Funeral Mass of Christian burial will begin 10 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 709 Croghan St., Fremont, OH 43420, with the Rev. Matt Frisbee presiding. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fremont, at a later date.
