Andrews Martin Obituary

Andrews Steen Martin

May 22, 1941 - Dec 19, 2025

Glenview, IL

Andrews Steen Martin (Andy), 84, residing in Glenview, Illinois, passed away Friday, December 19, 2025, at Glenview Terrace after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's.

Born at Good Samaritan Hospital in Sandusky, Andrews was the son of the late Fred A. and Corinne (Meyer) Martin Jr. and the brother of the late Fred A. Martin III. He was a 1959 graduate of Sandusky High School and a 1963 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a BA in business administration.

Andy proudly served his country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1963. Later that year, he received special weapons training in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was a Nuclear Weapons Officer on board the USS WASP CVS 18 and the Executive Officer of Coastal Division 17 in the Vietnam War. Andy commanded three hovercraft vehicles and other new technology used to rescue Marines and survey the Mekong River Delta. One of his proudest accomplishments was that all 42 men under his command returned home safely. After the war, Andy was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, Combat V. He was Honorably Discharged in 1968.

Andy married Emily Ann Gonsalves, November 23, 1968, and returned to Sandusky to operate Martin's Cafeteria Services upon the death of his father. Andy owned Martin's Cafeteria Services within the General Motors (GM) plant for 27 years. He expanded the services to include Martin's Catering to serve holiday, wedding and graduation occasions at the request of GM executives. Andy also established A.M. Vending, where he enjoyed the fast pace, camaraderie, and challenges of owning his own businesses. Andy successfully sold both companies in 1995 and, in 1997, became a manager of Island Express Boat Line until 2002.

Andy is survived by his loving wife, Ann, and three daughters who brought him so much joy, Jessica (Bill) Steuk, Alison (Drew) Rogers and Kimberly (Lawrence) Vick. Papa, as he was affectionately called, will be dearly missed by his ten grandchildren, Will (Marina), Corinne, Luke and Colette Steuk, Ryan, Emily and Molly Rogers, and Ella, Jesse and Mia Vick.

Andy was extremely proud to share his home with 30 foster newborns over the course of 30 years. He was a member of Sandusky YMCA for 65 years, serving over 20 years as a board member and two as board president. Andy gave his time and talent to Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky for 10 years as a driver for retired military personnel. Additionally, he was a volunteer at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, with over 3,600 hours of service. Andy was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. Finally, he happily served as a board member of Cedar Point Property Owners' Association for over 20 years and a board member of Oakland Cemetery for over 10 years. As a devout Catholic, Andy was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Huron, where he served on the audit committee, and Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sandusky, where he regularly prepared and served meals for the local priests. On Andy's 70th birthday, friends and family showered him with hundreds of letters. Recurring themes in the letters were his love for his family, loyalty to his friends and devotion to his employees.

Friends may call from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory Sandusky Chapel, 1607 E Perkins Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870. Prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2026, at Groff Funeral Homes. Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 428 Tiffin Avenue, Sandusky, with the Rev. Krzysztof Kardzis presiding. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, 2917 Milan Road, Sandusky, with full military honors.

Those wishing to honor Andy, his work ethic, and his dedication to his family are asked to consider donating to Alzheimer's Association Northwest Ohio Chapter, 480 W. Dussel Dr., Maumee, OH 43537.
