Sandusky
Marianne (Rengel) Cheetham, known affectionately to friends and family as Mari, 74, of Sandusky, passed away peacefully Monday, January 12, 2026, in Cleveland, after a brief illness.
Born in Sandusky, December 11, 1951, Mari's warm spirit and generous heart touched many throughout her 74 years of life. Mari grew up in Sandusky, where she cultivated lifelong friendships and a deep sense of community. After graduating from Sandusky High School in 1969, she pursued her passion for beauty and care at The Ohio State School of Cosmetology, graduating in 1971. Her commitment to her hometown was further demonstrated through her involvement with Sandusky LEADS, now known as Leadership Erie County, where she dedicated herself to preparing future leaders to serve their communities with integrity and compassion.
Professionally, Mari's career was marked by her dedication to helping others during their most trying times. Her roles as Administrative Assistant, Planner, and 911 Specialist with Erie County Emergency Management showcased her organizational skills and her ability to remain calm under pressure. She retired in 2017 after over two decades of exceptional service. Mari also brought comfort and care to countless families through her work at Groff Funeral Home and Toft Funeral Home, where she served in various capacities from office administrator to hairstylist. She also served as secretary of Sandusky Rotary Club for over 30 years, where she was valued for her dedication, attention to detail, and willingness to help whenever and wherever needed.
Mari's Christian faith was a guiding light in her life, providing her with strength and solace. She lived her beliefs through acts of kindness and her unwavering commitment to her family and friends.
Her interests were as varied as they were rich. An avid participant in the Perkins Athletic Boosters and Firelands Area Art League, Mari also found joy in expressing her creativity as a watercolor artist. Her hands were rarely still; she often crocheted beautiful baby blankets and other gifts, or prepared delicious meals as an excellent cook. Mari's love of reading was a gift she passed on to her daughter, Elaine, fostering a shared appreciation for the written word. She cherished playing cards, laughing with loved ones, exploring Amish Country, tending to her garden, and the simple pleasure of a good shopping trip.
Mari's loving nature was the cornerstone of her existence. She is survived by a family who adored her: her daughter, Elaine Cheetham; her son, Christopher Cheetham; twin sister, Gerianne (Tim) Bogard; brother, David L. (Paula) Rengel; sisters, Dianne (Steve) Westcott and Peggy (Jim) Lewis; sister-in-law, Marta Cheetham; special friend, Jeff Roth; and cherished friend, Linda Kelley. Her legacy also includes many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and honorary grandchildren, who will continue to honor her memory through the values she instilled in them.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Jack W. Cheetham, in 2021; parents, David E. Rengel, in 2017, and Barbara E. (Herb) Rengel, in 2018; mother and father-in-law, Margaret (Angello) Cheetham, in 2024, and Clyde A. Cheetham, in 2010.
Kind, generous, and ever-loving, Mari's impact on the world was profound and will be felt for generations to come. Her laughter, her counsel, and her unwavering support are irreplaceable. As we say goodbye to Marianne, we do so with gratitude for the time we were privileged to share with her, and with the knowledge that her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us all.
